Bedroom Lighting Ideas: How to Layer Light for a Restful, Beautiful Space
Share
Bedroom lighting is one of the most overlooked design decisions in a home. Most people get by with a single overhead fixture and a bedside lamp — but the right layered approach transforms a bedroom from functional to genuinely restful.
Here is how to do it right.
Start With Ambient Light — But Do It Right
Your overhead fixture sets the baseline. For bedrooms, avoid harsh direct downlighting. Instead, choose a flush mount or semi-flush ceiling light that distributes light softly across the ceiling and walls rather than pointing straight down.
A dimmable fixture is non-negotiable in a bedroom. You want the option to go from full brightness while getting dressed to a low glow at night. Most modern LED fixtures are dimmable when paired with a compatible dimmer switch.
Add Task Lighting at the Bedside
Table lamps or wall sconces at the bedside are the most important task lighting in a bedroom. They let you read, wind down, or get up in the middle of the night without flooding the room with light.
Wall-mounted swing arm sconces are the space-saving premium choice — no surface space required on the nightstand, and fully adjustable. Mount them at 48 to 60 inches from the floor, centered approximately 18 inches from the edge of the bed. Pair them on both sides of the bed for symmetry.
If you prefer table lamps, choose a height that puts the bottom of the shade at roughly eye level when seated — typically a lamp that is 26 to 30 inches tall on a standard nightstand.
Use Accent Lighting to Add Depth
A floor lamp in a corner, a sconce on an accent wall, or recessed lighting above a bookcase adds warmth and dimension that a single overhead light can never achieve. Accent lighting in a bedroom does not need to be bright — it just needs to be present.
Choose the Right Color Temperature
In bedrooms, stick to warm white light: 2700K to 3000K. This temperature is relaxing, flattering, and signals to your body that it is time to wind down. Avoid anything above 3500K in the bedroom — cool light suppresses melatonin and disrupts sleep.
The Finished Bedroom Lighting Plan
At minimum, a well-lit bedroom has three layers: a dimmable ambient fixture overhead, task lighting at each bedside, and at least one accent source. The result is a room that can be bright and functional when you need it, and soft and atmospheric when you want to relax.
