Pendant Light Height Guide: How Low Should Your Pendant Hang?
Share
Pendant lights are one of the most versatile fixtures in a home — and one of the easiest to get wrong. Too high and they lose their presence. Too low and they become a hazard. Here's how to nail the height every time.
Over a Kitchen Island
Hang the bottom of the pendant 30 to 36 inches above the countertop surface. For islands with seating, drop closer to the 30-inch mark.
Over a Dining Table
Bottom of pendant: 28 to 34 inches above the table surface. Lower feels more intimate; higher feels more airy.
In an Entryway or Foyer
The bottom of the fixture needs to be at least 7 feet from the floor. In a two-story foyer, hang to position the fixture at the visual center of the space when viewed from the main level.
How Many Pendants Over a Kitchen Island?
One pendant for every 2 feet of island length, with the first and last positioned about 12 inches from each end.
- 4-foot island: 1–2 pendants
- 6-foot island: 2–3 pendants
- 8-foot island: 3–4 pendants
Pendant Size vs. Ceiling Height
Add 1 inch of pendant height per foot of ceiling height above 8 feet. A 10-foot ceiling can carry a pendant 10 to 12 inches tall comfortably.
