How to Choose the Right Floor Lamp for Your Living Room
Share
A floor lamp does more than add light. In the right spot, it defines a zone, anchors a seating area, and gives a room the kind of layered warmth that overhead lighting alone can't create.
Size and Scale
Floor lamps typically stand 58 to 72 inches tall. When seated next to the lamp, the bottom of the shade should sit roughly at eye level or just above — comfortable for reading and conversation without glare.
Types and What They're Best For
Arc Floor Lamps
Extends over a sofa or chair, providing overhead-style light from a floor fixture. Ideal for seating areas without a ceiling fixture directly above. Look for a weighted marble base that supports the extended arm without tipping.
Tripod Floor Lamps
Inherently sculptural. Works well in corners and reading nooks. Rattan and natural material shades suit boho and coastal interiors particularly well.
Torchiere Floor Lamps
Directs light upward, bouncing it off the ceiling for soft, diffuse ambient light. Best in rooms with light-colored ceilings.
Reading Lamps
Adjustable-arm pharmacy lamps put focused task light exactly where you need it — the best option for a dedicated reading chair.
Placement Rules
- Behind and to the side of a sofa is the most versatile position
- In a corner, a floor lamp bounces light off two walls for softer illumination
- Allow at least 18 inches clearance between the lamp and adjacent seating
- Avoid placing directly in front of windows
