Wall Sconce Placement Guide: Height, Spacing and Position
Share
Wall sconces add light without consuming floor or table space, and they contribute to a room's character in ways a ceiling fixture can't. But placement is everything.
Standard Mounting Height
Center a wall sconce at 60 to 65 inches from the floor — roughly eye level for a standing adult. In hallways where you're moving through rather than stopping, stay toward the lower end of that range.
Bedroom Bedside Sconces
Measure from the floor to the top of your mattress, add 20 to 24 inches. That's your center mounting height — typically 48 to 60 inches depending on bed height. Position each sconce 18 to 24 inches to the side of the bed centerline.
Bathroom Vanity Sconces
Center at 60 inches from the floor, aligned with eye level. Position flanking sconces 36 to 40 inches apart (center to center) for a standard vanity. Side lighting eliminates the shadows a single overhead bar creates.
Living Room and Hallway Sconces
Mount at 60 to 65 inches from center. For a series along a hallway, 6 to 8 feet apart (center to center) provides good rhythm without overcrowding.
Spacing Between Pairs
When mounting sconces either side of a focal point, the gap between them should be roughly equal to the width of the feature they flank, or slightly wider.
