Center over the dining or conference table with the fixture bottom at 28 to 36 inches above the table surface — closer to 28 for standard ceilings where the room height does not support higher hanging, closer to 36 in rooms with higher ceilings where the fixture needs to remain within the visual field of seated occupants. For home offices with dedicated work desks, hang slightly higher at 36 to 42 inches above the work surface to create broad, even task illumination. In commercial dining and restaurant installations, run parallel fixtures spaced 4 to 5 feet apart for consistent coverage across the full dining area. The matte black version suits darker, more dramatic interior palettes; gray works best with lighter walls, natural wood tones, and cooler-toned material palettes.
- Over a table or island
- Leave about 30–36 in between the surface and the bottom of the fixture so it lights the table without blocking sightlines.
- Open floor
- Where people walk underneath, keep 7 ft (84 in) or more of headroom; add 3 in for each foot of ceiling above 8 ft.
- Over a long table
- Aim for a fixture about half to two thirds the table's length, or a row of pendants spaced 24–30 in apart.
- The bulb
- 2700K–3000K warm white suits living and dining rooms; 3000K–3500K reads crisper in kitchens and baths.
Designer's rule of thumb: add the room's length and width in feet. That number, in inches, is a good fixture width.
