Over kitchen islands, center the fixture along the island's length and hang 30 to 36 inches above the counter surface — the bottom of the pendant should be within arm's reach from a standing position for visual connection without interfering with work activities. For dining rooms, center over the table at 28 to 34 inches above the surface. In living rooms used as multi-function spaces, position this fixture over a coffee table or central seating arrangement to create a defined, intimate zone within a larger open-plan area — a linear overhead fixture is one of the most effective tools for zone definition in open-plan residential design. For commercial applications, mount two or three parallel runs across long tables or counter arrangements for comprehensive, even coverage.
- Over a table or island
- Leave about 30–36 in between the surface and the bottom of the fixture so it lights the table without blocking sightlines.
- Open floor
- Where people walk underneath, keep 7 ft (84 in) or more of headroom; add 3 in for each foot of ceiling above 8 ft.
- Over a long table
- Aim for a fixture about half to two thirds the table's length, or a row of pendants spaced 24–30 in apart.
- The bulb
- 2700K–3000K warm white suits living and dining rooms; 3000K–3500K reads crisper in kitchens and baths.
Designer's rule of thumb: add the room's length and width in feet. That number, in inches, is a good fixture width.
